Welcome on the pages dedicated to the Department of Chemistry!
Study of chemistry belongs, without doubt, to a most exciting, a most beautiful, a most thrilling and also a most challenging. Chemistry is everywhere around us and there wouldn't be life without it. Just take in your hand any product which you use in your everyday life, a mobile phone or a sweater, or shoes, furniture, ordinary plastic bag for your snack - it is almost certain that chemistry took a turn in its creation.
Take a look at your body: every process going on in it so that we can eat, drink, breathe, that is live, has a (bio)chemical or physiochemical basis. If our body doesn't function as it should, it has to be supported with medicine. They originated solely from chemical reactions from other chemical elements.
What about cars, which most of us use? Majority of their components have also been produced by chemical processes. Burning of fuel, catalyst functions, ... these are also chemistry. We could go on this way without end... We breathe air, drink water, use a lot of raw materials or products, which the Earth provides us with. All these contain chemical substances.
What is so wonderful about chemistry? The fact that it is functioning without us. A lot of people aren't aware of the fact that they can't live without chemistry. Nevertheless, they do.
This is just a fragment of what we can tell you about chemistry in these few lines. You can study chemistry all your life and still learn new things. Have you started thinking about the possibility of studying chemistry? We can congratulate you on the perfect choice and will be glad to welcome you among our students!

Department of Chemistry is opening several new study fields within 2 study programs (Chemistry; Chemistry and Technology of Materials)
Three-year bachelor's degree program
Toxicology and pollutants analysis
The aim of the course is to prepare graduates with knowledge of general toxicology and special toxicology of particular inorganic and organic pollutants and their analyses. Part of the contents of the study field is devoted to toxicology of plant and animal toxins, military toxicology, agrochemicals toxicology, toxicology of pharmaceuticals and industrial toxicology along with the analysis of possible risks and disasters, possibilities of their occurrence and after-effects, and possibilities for their prevention. A component part of study is gaining knowledge of modern devices and experimental methods applied in practice. Indispensable part of the entire study is acquainting students with the current legislature of the Czech Republic and the EU in the fields related to chemical substances and preparatives, legislature related to pollutants in the environment, their effects on living organisms, human health protection and environment protection. This way, the graduates of this study field get a broader range of areas where they can find employment.
Building Chemistry
The study field is oriented towards providing knowledge and skills related to practicing profession in the field of marketing of chemical products and products used in building, in the field of technology of building materials, plastics, coating compositions and silicate products, and in the field of application of these products in building.
Chemistry for two-subject program
The study is regarded as a two-subject program and is realised exclusively in combination with another field of the two-subject program. The students are trained in three fields. The first component is training in chemistry. The second area is teacher training and psychology, which forms the introductory framework for further professional training. The third area presents the so-called common base, which includes language preparation and study of conventional cultivating disciplines. The subject of chemistry for two-subject program is offered primarily to those students who, on completing the study program, would like to continue in the follow-up master's degree program for teachers of chemistry at secondary schools. However, a graduate of this program can choose to leave for professional practice in a chemistry related job.
Chemistry oriented towards teaching
The study is regarded as a two-subject program and is realised exclusively in combination with another field of the two-subject program. The students are trained in three fields. The first component is training in chemistry. The second area is teacher training and psychology, which forms the introductory framework for further professional training. The third area presents the so-called common base, which includes language preparation and study of conventional cultivating disciplines. The study field of Chemistry for teaching is offered primarily to those students who, on completing the study program, would like to continue in the follow-up master's degree program for teachers of chemistry at the second stage of basic schools. However, a graduate of this program can choose to leave for professional practice in a chemistry related job.
In cooperation with other departments of the Faculty of Science a multi-subject program:
Teaching of natural sciences
School educational programs (hereafter SEP) and Framework educational programs (hereafter FEP), which have been applied at all basic schools in the Czech Republic since 2008, envisage a new way of natural sciences teaching. Teaching is no longer viewed, in the way we have so far been used to, as divided into separate natural science subjects, but in a new way, as divided into so-called educational fields, for example, Man and Nature, which requires integration of natural sciences knowledge. In view of this, it is necessary to train teachers capable of the new teaching methods. For this purpose there was opened last year a new study field which should start preparing teachers for natural sciences domains. In future, we are planning its expansion with the follow-up master's degree program.
Two-year master's degree program
Teaching of chemistry at the second stage of basic schools
The study of Teaching of chemistry for the second stage of basic schools is carried out in two-subject combinations and is a follow-up of the corresponding bachelor's program of Chemistry for teacher training or Chemistry for two-subject program. The aim of the course is to train teachers of chemistry for the second stage of basic schools, or the lower stage of eight-year grammar schools, who will have professional qualification for direct pedagogical employment in teaching chemistry and the second studied subject. The focus of the contents lies in the study of the opted accreditation study fields and their professional didactics, and in their interconnection with pedagogical, psychological disciplines and with pedagogical practice.
Research tasks under investigation at the Department of Chemistry are pertinent to the Department staffing and currently running projects. Presently, they are primarily oriented at assessment of contaminants in the environment, synthesis of important organic substances, computation, estimation and simulation of properties of substances or some physical and chemical processes. In our research tasks, we cooperate with other higher education institutions (Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague, Department of Health Care at the University of Defence in Hradec Kralove) or the Institutes of the Academy of Science (Institute of Chemical Process Fundamentals, the Academy of Science of Czech Republic in Prague), with institutions abroad.
We offer to our students:
Applicants for all the listed bachelor's degree programs are admitted without entrance examinations.
