Department od Mathematics

Along with the study of mathematics at all the three academic levels (bachelor's degree, follow-up master's degree and doctoral degree), Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science UJEP offers to its students  a team of teachers who can interest them not only by the span of their research activity in different fields of mathematics, but also by the spectrum of their personality and by individual approach to students.

When it concerns "perception" and, especially, cognition, teachers at the department are very consistent, almost pedantic. They are famed for their uncompromising, yet fair attitude, in the same way as flared bohemians, they are famed for their bond of sympathy with the students who are of the similar kind as themselves. Here are represented very young teachers (including three women) as well as professors dignified by their merit and experience. Students can get acquainted with them not only while studying, but also at numerous optional seminars and department events, or summer school of mathematics.

With some exaggeration, we can claim that in the Usti region we are the only place in the Usti region  where you can really learn what means mathematical thinking, sense of logical and correct reasoning and expressing, and, at the same time, a very special sense of humour inherent with mathematics only.

Doc. PaedDr. Petr Eisenmann, Csc.

Head of the Department of Mathematics

Study

Bachelor's degree study fields in Mathematics

Single-subject:

Mathematical informatics

Specifically, graduate in this study field will have thorough knowledge both of mathematic basics and also of computer and communication technologies, network protocols, fundamental procedures of practical solving of tasks arising  in connection with the problems of security and reliability of information systems. Graduate of the bachelor's degree program in Mathematical informatics will be able to continue studies in a related field of the follow-up master's degree program. He will also be able to implement the acquired knowledge and methods of thinking in practice, particularly, as mathematic analysts, or system analysts in private institutions (financial institutions, production enterprises, services ...) or in public sector ( state administration, local administration, education, health care, academic institutions, ...) where the problems of information reliability, security and transfer arise.

Mathematics and its application in natural sciences

This study field offers two orientations - General mathematics and Mathematics in natural sciences. Orientation towards general mathematics is primarily intended at preparing students for a follow-up study program in some of the mathematic fields. Mathematic knowledge of a graduate of this orientation will include all fundamental mathematic courses. He will also be able to work at  good level with computer, use special mathematical programs (e.g. Mathematica) and statistical programs (Statistica), and will be prepared for creative use of further software application programs, for massive data processing and their analysis.

Graduate with orientation towards mathematics in natural sciences will possess, along with the knowledge of the fundamental mathematical disciplines in accordance with his choice of optional subjects, a solid basis in the opted non-mathematic field ( geography, biology, chemistry, physics), and will be able to use his knowledge of mathematics and its techniques in these natural sciences.  His advantage will be the ability to communicate with natural scientists and engineers.

Students with both orientations will be able, on graduation, to continue their studies in one of the related follow-up master's degree programs.

Two-subject

Mathematics

Mathematics oriented towards teaching

The study is regarded as a two-subject program and is realised in combination with another subject for the two-subject program.

The first-choice route for a graduate is to continue his studies in the follow-up master's degree  program in teaching of mathematics at basic and secondary schools. However, our method of graduates preparation also counts with the possibility that he may start work. After a short practice, graduate can find good employment with every enterprise where he can solve managerial problems, and also with enterprises whose activity has a technical content at solving technical problems of mathematical character, with  freight and transportation companies, in banks and financial institutions, as well as in administration offices where they require data processing and work with PC. Applicants intent  for pedagogical career, should opt for the study field of mathematics oriented towards teaching, others should opt for the field of mathematics.

Follow-up master's degree programs in Mathematics

Teaching of mathematics at the second stage of basic schools

Teaching of mathematics at secondary schools

The aim of the course is to prepare teachers of mathematics for basic or secondary schools who will have professional qualification for direct pedagogical activity in mathematics and in the second studied field.  The focal point of the content lies in the study of the opted approved fields and their  didactics, and in their coupling with pedagogical and psychological disciplines and pedagogical practice. The course is completed with graduation examination in mathematics and the other studied field, in pedagogy and psychology, and with a diploma thesis in one of the studied subjects.

Doctoral program in mathematics

General mathematical problems

Accomplishing of this study program is accredited as collaborative with the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of West Bohemia in Plzen.

Note: all the above listed study fields are accredited as full-time (day-time) study, only the bachelor's degree program of Mathematics (two-subject program) and doctoral program are accredited as combined study.

Science and Research

The following fields of research are being developed at the department:

  • General topology, topologic groups and space functions
  • Real analysis and its application for the tasks of computation of variants and differential equations, function spaces and presentation from the point of structure and quality aspects
  • Modern theory of derivation and integral
  • Non-associative algebra and the theory of binary systems.
  • Variety of aligned half-groups
  • Phylo- and ontogenetic development of fundamental concepts and ideas connected with the infinity phenomenon

In the past years, the department staff shared in investigating a number of research and development projects, for example:

The project of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic " Obstacles in phylogenetic and ontogenetic development of the concept of infinity".

The project of  the European Social Fund "Building of multimedia laboratory for teaching natural sciences subjects".

The department staff are collaborating on preparing joint publications, conferences and exchange stays with the following foreign universities:

  • State University of New York College, Cortland, USA
  • University of Pittsburgh, USA
  • Universitetet Oslo, Norway
  • L"Universite de Cae, Cann, France
  • Katolicka univerzita in Ruzomberk, Slovakia
  • Akademia Pedagogiczna im. Komisji Edukacji Narodowej, Krakow, Poland

The department staff are members of a number of editorial boards in home and foreign journals, for example: Topology and its Applications, Italian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics or Quasigroups and Related Structures.

Life at the department

The Department of mathematics regularly holds:

  • Didactics seminar for teachers of mathematics at basic and secondary schools of the North Bohemia region
  • The department regularly arranges events for pupils of basic schools and students of secondary schools, for example:
  • Mathematic correspondence seminar KoS Severak
  • Summer school of mathematics and physics for students of secondary schools

In the framework of optional courses, students are able to study interesting disciplines which will make it easier for them to enter employment market. ( e.g. Mathematics of finance), and also to participate in attractive popularization workshops, as for example, "Origami and mathematics".

Admission Procedure

For all bachelor's degree programs, students are admitted without entrance examinations.
